What's New in the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

December 2018 - The museum has been existing in limbo these last several months. The program I have used for years became too old and is no longer supported online. I set out to learn the "new" ways of doing websites and this is the result. It will take awhile to move everything off the old program and onto this new one, and try to update as I go along. Please note that any links listed below will not work once the old site is abandoned.

 

 

 

October 17, 2016 - updated the Girl Scout Posters and Publicity page with dozens of images of Girl Scout posters through the years.

October 15, 2016 - New page: Senior Scout Campus Conferences, solving an old mystery of a pin I found on a Senior Girl Scout uniform.

October 14, 2016 - The All-States Encampments page has been updated with articles and pictures. The camps ran from 1951 through 1968, the 1969 Encampment at the National Center West never materialized. The camps ran yearly, sometimes just one camp, sometimes 2 sessions in the same camp, sometimes 5 regional camps and generally limited to Senior Girl Scouts - except for 1958 when experienced Intermediate Girl Scouts were allowed to attended. The events were often international as well. Check out the page!

September 11, 2016 - Still working in the Girl Scout Library, dusting off the books, finding new titles, adding pages to website: Girl Scout Non-Fiction books of Merit (tracking down old obscure titles written by or related to Girl Scouts) and Girl Scout Bookplates - the elegant way to not lose a book when it gets borrowed.

September 9, 2016 - Finishing up the updates to the Girl Scout Fiction Books - I tracked down some obscure titles that I found on old Girl Scout reading lists. One is Silver Birch, by Dorothy Lyons. Its about a group of girls who want to start a Mounted Girl Scout Troop, but one girl doesn't own a horse! Then she finds the "untamable" Silver Birch, a mare. Girl Scout Fiction is on 3  pages now 1918-1930's, 1940's-1950's and 1960's - current.

September 6, 2016 - Updating the Girl Scout Fiction section - those pages may or may not be available while I'm working on them.

New page - American Girl Books - from collected reprints from the American Girl magazines or fresh stories, these books are fun to hunt for.

August 25, 2016 - new page Daisy Magazine Covers. Daisy magazine was a brief GSUSA publication in the late 1970's for older Brownies and Junior age levels. Only 67 issues were published until summer of 1981. So far I've only found 10 covers.

New Page: Girl Scout Woggles, Bolos and Tie Slides

 Updated American Girl Covers - the page got so large it had to be divided into sections: 1920-1930, 1940-1950, 1960-1970.

August 19, 2016 - several new American Girl Magazine covers added to the AG page in the Library.

August 13, 2016 - munching on the new Pillsbury Girl Scout Thin Mint Brownies! New page - Bridging Through Girl Scouts.

August 5, 2016 - Back to work updating pages and such. New pages: Things that are not Girl Scout and Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards 1980-2015, including the Gold Award Centennial items. Found more things to add to the Girl Scouts on TV page. Updated the older charms page. Discovered that the old Brownie Page and Girl Scout Swim Suits pages have disappeared. I'm working to fix that.

January 14, 2014 - Happy New Year to all! I've been busy in the Girl Scout Camps State by State section, updating and adding new camps. Thanks to everyone who wrote in with their camp memories and pictures!!!!!

December 29, 2013 - J. Hudson, a Junior Troop Leader sent in these pin images and explained that they were from the Gateway GS Council and were used as recognition for Service Team leaders and Service Team volunteers. THANKS! ( the funny look to the surface is from the plastic bags they were in, which I cropped. I'm sure the pins are nice and smooth)

 

 

December 26, 2013 -  There are several pages with image errors. I am fixing them one page at a time. Please be patient with me! It happened with the most recent update to the Expression Web 4 program.

While updating the Girl Scout Rose page I found and added: a picture of Eugene S. Boerner, the man who developed the Girl Scout Rose, a diagram of the Girl Scout garden plan used in Modesto, CA to plant the Girl Scout Rose, and learned that it would be literally impossible to create a list of places where the Girl Scout Rose was planted, as it seems to have been planted in just about every city park, hospital walkway, Girl Scout camp, and school.

 The Camp Andree Clark page has been updated.

Did you know that Louise Amelia Andree Clark (1902-1919) who is the namesake of Camp Andree Clark died suddenly of cerebro-spinal meningitis at just 17? Although she died at their summer home in Maine, she was placed in the family mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.

She is also the namesake of the Andree Clark Bird Refuge in  Santa Barbara, CA.

Her sister, Hugette Clark recently died a wealthy recluse at the age of 104, in New York.

Learned a bit more about a mystery about the MACY frog - did you know there was one? I found an old postcard showing the MACY frog and I wondered - where was it and was it still there. Just today I came across a newer postcard of Camp Andree Clark, in color, that shows the frog. So maybe it never was at MACY. Is it still at Camp Andree Clark?

December 22, 2013 - New Page: Girl Scout Handbooks.

December 21, 2012 - Girl Scout Golden Eaglet Marigold flower information found! I had no idea this flower ever existed, but it was shown at the International Flower Show in New York in the spring of 1936! Seeds were sold through the Peter Henderson and Company Seed Catalog. So... a new page was added to the Girl Scout Garden section just for this wonderful gem.

 

 

December 17, 2013 - I finally solved an item on the Mystery page - the Alpha Pi Delta key with the Girl Scout logo on it.

       

Founded in 1934, a sorority called Alpha Pi Delta that was (at first) exclusively for those who had earned the Golden Eaglet. Later it was amended to add First Class Girl Scouts who were now in college.  This information shown above was found in a 1940 college yearbook.

The current Alpha Pi Deltas are not associated with Girl Scouting.

 

December 16, 2013 - The Site Map page is finally up and running. That should help get you to where you want to go. The Girl Scout Pins section is being updated. New Page; Girl Scout Service Bars. There are still many errors in images throughout the website waiting to be fixed.

 

 

November 2013 -- As the Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum reaches it's 13th birthday it has undergone yet another massive update. Behind the scenes many glitches have been repaired, as well as some sprucing up here and there. Hopefully this will allow quicker updates.

I'm pretty sure this update will knock out any bookmarks you may have done with the old version. Sorry.

It's hard to believe my beloved website is now 13 years old!

March 23 - Have you ever bumped into Girl Scout Betty? She was a comic strip character that ran for 53 episodes way back in 1931-1932. Betty and her Girl Scout training helped her through all sorts of trials and tribulations. It took a lot of hunting and searching to find her, but I was able to uncover several episodes. The author was renowned illustrator Montfort Amory.  She now has her own page. Check her out! Here's an example:

February 26, I'm more than half way through the Camp updates, and the list is at 755 verifiable Girl Scout camps so far! Just finished up Puerto Rico, Delaware, and US Territories.

February 8, 2012 - This grid below shows that Camp Scrapbook pages that have been updated, if they have a line under the letters - the link will take you to that page. You'll notice there are more "states" listed than normal. Those are territories or GSUSA camps overseas. Each update to a page can take up to a week to complete, however, I really enjoy the research! I just completed the GSUSA camps overseas for Europe, Africa and the Mediterranean (AE).

The Camp List A-Z page has been updated and linked to the other camp pages. The list only contains the states that have been updated so far.

Thanks for the emails - the Cookie Pins link is fixed.

November 27, 2011 - I've been researching and updating the Camp Scrapbook section of the website. It's slow going work. I've completed about a dozen pages: NM, AZ, SD, PA (not completely done), AL, UT, ID, MT, CT, OK, NV, WY, AK. I've been scouring newspaper archives to track down the information on older or extinct camps.

November 1 - Girl Scout Camp Red Rock in Oklahoma is up for sale, $990,000 - if you got it handy. T. Young sent me the following link:

While doing a bit of research on the sale, I came across another Girl Scout Camp that's for sale. Camp Tenkiller in Oklahoma. So Sad...




October 30 - starting an overhaul to the Camp Scrapbook sections, pages may be unavailable at times. Merana sent in an image of a GS cookie jar I've never seen, and some Girl Scout Galoshes!

October 26 - Wow, just returned from Arizona. I was able to visit the Girl Scout - Arizona Cactus-Pine Council Shop. They were so wonderful and nice! My sister, sister-in-law and myself were allowed to visit the Barbara Anderson Girl Scout Museum and explore the the treasures. I also picked up some fun pins and patches from the shop. Thank you so much ladies! 

        

Their council is selling the new fall product tin that's in the shape of old luggage with Girl Scout stickers. My council isn't selling them, so I was so thankful I was able to purchase one.



Then I went to the local Wal-Mart in Prescott and found the "Friendly's Girl Scout Thin Mint Ice Cream Cake" - again not available in my area.
 I bought one for our family dinner we had later that day. And I kept the box -


The final treat was the Hobby Lobby of Prescott. They had some Girl Scout fabric. I picked up a couple of yards. It was nice to see some was still available.

October 17 - Check out the Girl Scout Cookie Section! I've been working on updating and adding new items to the Girl Scout Cookie section. New page; Girl Scout Cookie Jars. I started a wonderful timeline of Girl Scout Cookies, including wonderful tidbits of boycotts, episodes of tampering with the cookies, the baking company that couldn't keep up with the demands of Girl Scout cookies, when new boxes and varieties of cookies appeared. The Cookie box section was so big, it became 2 pages: Girl Scout Cookie Boxes - Modern Era and Vintage Girl Scout Cookie Boxes - now you can close in on a date for your box collection. There are plenty of mystery cookie boxes - do you know who baked them and when???????Girl Scout Cookie Posters has been updated as well.




October 8 - updated and renamed the Putting A Date To Your Girl Scout Cookie Boxes page. The boxes were identify by combing through old issues of Girl Scout Leader Magazines and other sources. 
 I've identified the following bakers; 
     Weston's Biscuit Company
     Burry's Biscuit Company
     Famous Foods of Virginia (FFV - a company of Southern Biscuit Company)    
     Megowen-Educator Food Company
     Blue Ribbon Cake Company
     Carr Consolidated Biscuit Company
     Brownie Baker Company
 That's seven of the 29 licensed bakers thought to active in the 1940s - 1950s, and doesn't included ABC or Little Brownie bakers.



Also, I was left with 21 examples of Girl Scout cookie boxes that I could not identify the baker. Can you help?
Can anyone put a date on this little square Girl Scout cookie gem?

October 6 - new page launched, Girl Scout Cookbooks through the years, just a small collection of cookbooks offered by GSUSA and other organizations. Ernie sent in an update to the Mystery GG/GS page. Happy to see the Cookie Pin continues for 2012.

October 2 - two months since my last update! I apologize to everyone who sent in email. I have been dreadfully slow in answering them. I am updating the website this week with many of those emails that contained new info. With the launch of the new website program in March I accidentally omitted several Girl Scout pin pages (Figural Pins, Rare pins, Fun Pins, etc) they are now listed on the Site Map page and at the bottom of every Girl Scout pin page. Laura B. was kind enough to send in the location of the Juliette Low Plaque - YEAH! The Alvaters sent in a new vintage Girl Scout Valentineand Girl Scout Bus Pass. There are people who attended Girl Scout camps in New York and in Italy looking to connect with other campers. Ward Ryan sent in images of his mom in her Girl Scout Hospital Aide uniform (I misplaced her name, I'm sorry). Janet H. of New York sent in information about the Girl Scout Service Pin and all those bars (there were 12 bars that could be earned). Two mysteries were solved on the Mystery page by international visitors to the website; Cameron and Thomas.

July 30 - The new Scouting stamps - the girl version is not available yet.

GIRL SCOUTS PUT THEIR HEART ON DISPLAY

 

 

Girl Scouts Put Their Heart on Display on North Michicago Avenue!
 

Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is sharing its heart with everyone in the greater Chicago area! Eager to show our vibrant brand to the world and provide our support for a heart-health awareness campaign from Northwestern’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, we are participating in the very visible, prominent "Hearts a Bluhm" public art display and awareness campaign. Our Girl Scout-themed, five-foot-high ceramic heart, painted with a bright green sash and trefoil shape, was painted by a student from Columbia College and is on display for all to see on North Michigan Avenue, between Ontario and Ohio streets through the month of February. We hope you have an opportunity to view our heart and all the other creative hearts on display to call attention to heart health in February!

                        The Girl Scout Anniversaries are divided into a page for each anniversary; 25th, 50th, etc
    Updates to the Bicentennial page - does anyone have a color image of the official GSUSA Bicentennial candle?
 
Apparently it was ok to wear the pin or the patch of the International Women's Year (a stylized dove with the women's symbol ) on the Girl Scout uniform for a short time.


  This October 1975 cover of the Girl Scout Leader helps us to date two items. The girl is wearing a Macy Bolo tie and one version of the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund pin. 




Did the new age level  in Girl Scouting - Ambassador  - have a familiar ring to those of us with older ears? Yep - remember these?

    

The Ambassador and Ambassador program was launched in 1975, for Girl Scouts who move and for the new troop that accepted the moved Girl Scout. This brief program (gone by 1979) encouraged any Girl Scout who moved to share with her new troop something about her old community; local customs, unique celebrations, etc. This would qualify her to be an Ambassador. The troop accepting the new girl would share information about her new community. This would qualify them for the Ambassador Aide patch. There is no indication in the October 1975 issue of the Girl Scout Leader magazine that this program was limited to any certain age level of Girl Scouting.


Bummer - found this little tidbit. Did they ever tell Rebecca they went with a younger Girl Scout? At least she got to meet the (future) President!

Tears of Sadness - I started working on updating the Camp Scrapbook, listing all the camps and showing patches, postcards, etc. I was heartbroken to see how many camps are closed or are closing. Soon all we will have are photographs and memories.



April 13 - Researching the Girl Scout Committee/Associate pin that was offered from 1920 and gone by 1957.Official Adult-Level Girl Scout Pins   It seems that the G.S. was added to the pin prior to 1933 - which is what the date the Girl Scout Collector's Guide states. The GS catalog from 1927 clearly shows the GS on the pin. Also - any idea why the cost of the pin dropped from 75 cents to 25 cents? Were the first ones of real gold? Looking for an image of the pin made prior to the GS being added.

April 10 - Donna K. of New Jersey was kind enough to send me some images of patches and other things from her adventures in Girl Scouting. March 20th - new page added, Cadette Girl Scouts from 1963 forward  - not completed yet, I was getting tired. It goes up to 2000. It's an overall look at the Cadette program and the uniforms. I'll finish it up when I can.

March 2011 - The Vintage Girl Scout Online Museum has gone through a much needed update of the web-building program. I have retired the old Front Page program and have rebuilt the museum in Expressions Web 4. As you will see as your wander through the museum, there are new things to see, some things that have moved, and some thing waiting to be launched. My goal was to make the website formatting up-to-date. Front Page was woefully out of date. My hope is that updating this website will go faster. Old bookmarks will no longer work.
